How can I overcome PMWS on my unit?
Knowledge on the causes of and ways of overcoming Post-weaning Multi-systemic Wasting Syndrome is developing all the time. It has been suggested that management of the pigs can have a major effect on the incidence and severity of PMWS on farm. Minimising stress on the pigs (less mixing or retaining in litter groups after weaning) improved hygiene and optimisation of nutrition of the pig have all been reported as reducing the effects of PMWS. There are a number of documents in the Document Library on the subject of PMWS, these can be accessed once you have registered, for more information please view these documents. Alternatively click this link info@bocmpauls.co.uk to send an e-mail for our local account manager to contact you. Another good source of information is thepigsite.com, click this link and scroll down to the end of the page to see the latest results (use the back button on your browser to get back to this page).

How can I make my pigs grow faster but still grade well?
The use of the Pig Growth Simulator has shown the value of modelling the growth of the finishing pig. From a simple set of input data including the feeding, housing and genetics of the pig an assessment of the current performance and areas for improvement can be made. Your BOCM PAULS Pig Account Manager will be able to carry out an assessment of your pigs and show you the benefits that can be gained. What are you doing about non-GM ingredients?
BOCM PAULS is discussing with suppliers the availability and price of Cert ID approved Soyabean Meal. This material is available in quantities of between 200/400,000 tonnes when the UK requirement is 2-million tonnes. Our concern is that the Non-GMO Soyabean Meal premium is likely to increase as demand increases against a limited supply. We are discussing with retailers their exact requirements in compound feeds. The so called soft IP standard which we are currently working to is both easier to achieve and less costly. If you have any queries please contact your Commercial Manager or Commercial Director

Do BOCM PAULS sell creep feeds?
Yes, we are one of the leading creep feed manufacturers in the UK, and also sell these products overseas. Your Account Manager can explain the system to you and help you to select the best option for your unit.

If I don't get my delivery first thing Monday morning, how can I be sure that the lorry is not bringing disease onto my farm?
It is of course not possible for every customer to receive their delivery on a Monday morning. However, we ensure that our lorries are cleaned and disinfected every time they return to the mill, to keep the risk of disease spread to a minimum. We try to arrange the delivery route to ensure that deliveries to the high health units are done at the beginning of the run. You can help us by positioning your bulk bins on the edge of your unit, and providing lorry dips or wheel cleaning facilities.

Now fish meal has been banned for ruminants, will you be able to use it in my pig feeds?
Yes. BOCM PAULS were the first company to introduce species specific mills, to prevent any possible contamination between ruminant and monogastric (pig and poultry) ingredients. We can continue to use fish meal in our pig and poultry mills, even when the new legislation is in place.

What weight for age should my pigs be at the different stages of production?
Weaning at around 24 days your pigs should weigh 7 to 8 kg.
At 11 weeks of age the pigs should have reached around 30 to 35 kg.
90 kg should be the target weight to be achieved in around 20 to 22 weeks.

How can I get the best breeding herd performance?
Careful management of the gilt from delivery on the unit and correct feeding are the keys to success. Use BOCM PAULS Pigbreed Prime, the first gilt feed on the market, to ensure that your gilts are in 'prime' condition for service and will provide all the nutrients they need during the first pregnancy. For your sows use a two feed program such as Pigbreed Pioneer in pregnancy and Pigbreed Challenger in lactation to maintain good body condition and provide the nutrients required at the different stages of the reproductive cycle of the sow. However, all herds are different and for a tailored and personalised feeding solution contact your local Pig Feed Account Manager. Click the 'Contact Us' button on the home page or click the following link info@bocmpauls.co.uk to send an e-mail for our local account manager to contact you.
